Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about our AI-powered categorization tool.
Tax Season
Export the Excel workbook with "Business transactions only" ticked and the tax year selected. The first two tabs are what an accountant actually needs: an "All Transactions" ledger with the business, refund and notes columns, and a "Tax Summary" tab that rolls your categories up by tax-form line and shows what was spent, the recoverable sales tax, and the claimable amount. The PDF report carries the same summary if they prefer a document.
Every transaction has a business checkbox in the table, and bulk edit can set it for a whole selection at once. Once any row is flagged, the Tax Summary defaults to business rows only and says so in its scope note. The Reports tab has a matching scope toggle, and the export has a "Business transactions only" checkbox.
On the Categories tab you can map each category to a line on the CRA T2125 or the IRS Schedule C. The Tax Summary then totals your spending by that line instead of by your own category names, which is the form your accountant transcribes from. It is optional: anything you leave unmapped is listed in an "Unmapped" section rather than being dropped, so nothing disappears quietly.
Yes. Each category can carry a claimable percentage, so meals can be set to 50 percent. For home and vehicle costs you set a business-use percentage once in Deduction settings and every category on those lines inherits it. Categories flagged as capital assets are listed separately rather than expensed, because they belong to capital cost allowance or depreciation.
If you are registered and claim input tax credits, tick "includes tax" on the categories whose amounts are tax-inclusive and pick your rate in Deduction settings. The Tax Summary then splits each amount into its pre-tax base and the recoverable tax, and computes the claimable figure from the pre-tax base so you are not deducting tax you already recovered. If you are not registered, leave the flag off and the full amount is used.
The importer detects the layout automatically for RBC, TD, Scotiabank, BMO, CIBC and Tangerine exports, and for most other banks by reading the column headers or the shape of the data. Before anything is saved it shows you the columns it picked and a preview of the parsed rows, so you can correct the mapping if a file is unusual. Credit-card exports where every charge is positive are detected too.
Duplicates are skipped. A row is considered already imported when the date, description and amount all match something you have, and the upload message tells you how many were skipped. Two genuinely identical transactions on the same day still both import when neither is already stored.
No. This tool organizes your own numbers and totals them the way the forms are laid out. The line numbers, percentages and tax rates are yours to confirm against the current CRA or IRS guide, and your accountant should review the result before you file.
